Set Sail: Electric power on the Charles River!

New electric motors have fully arrived to replace the internal combustion engines.

MIT Sailing is in a position to shift the sailing world away from environmentally toxic outboard engines. A new company named Pure Watercraft is devoted to establishing itself as the leader in this particular power range of the marketplace. Torqeedo is well established in the less than 20 hp market but until Pure came along there were no reliable options.

Rapid charging along with zero maintenance is but one aspect of lithium ion battery power.

Please check out the following two articles:

The first article is from the Professional Boatbuilder magazine which lays out a bit of company history for Pure Watercraft and their thought process in bringing these to market.

The second piece is from MIT students who currently are on the crew team. They outline how critical it is to bring sustainability and how an internal combustion engine without a catalytic converter is one of the most polluting sources of power legally produced in the US.

Won't you help us transition our sport away from internal combustion engines by helping us purchase an engine for the Matty Cohen and the Kyle Welch safety launches? These boats get used every day from March through November and are an essential part of keeping the program safe.

The first engine with a battery and charger costs $16500. The second engine is $12500 as we would not need a second charger
