Start of 2012 season! The 2012 Learn-to-sail season will start on May 2, 2012 with Wednesday classes, and May 13, 2012 with Sunday classes. We look forward to a great summer!

With the new Techs coming in, we are likely to start the summer with smaller classes (max 30 sailors per session). These will likely be restricted to members of the MIT Community (students, faculty, staff, alumni, post-docs, etc., and immediate family) unless space permits. Policy will be re-evaluated later in the summer.

We encourage you to take your non-MIT friends sailing on your own and teach them to sail using your new skills!

We also anticipate having some refresher courses for experienced sailors who just want the basics of rigging the new Techs, and maybe some pointers on sailing technique. Dates and times for these are currently TBD.

Learn-to-Sail: Sundays All-in-one

When

Sundays -- 2 sessions: 9:00am to 1:30pm & 9:30am to 2:30pm during the Summer.

  • NOTE: The class is almost always over-subscribed, show up no later than 9:15am to sign-in and get boat assignments!
  • NOTE: Pre-registered students must show up by 8:55am (for 9:00 session) or 9:15am (for 9:30 session) or forfeit their spot.
  • NOTE: This is NOT a "take a friend for a sail" class. Everyone is expected to learn and demonstrate their new sailing abilities.

Handouts: You can use these handouts both before and after the class:

    Who

This class is intended for members of the MIT Community who have no prior sailing experience and want to become active sailors at MIT.

Attendance is limited to 30 people per session! (This number may change depending on conditions and boat availability.)

Those with prior experience (including any prior graduates of the Learn-to-sail classes) who wish to have a "refresher" are encouraged to attend the Wednesday #2 and #3 lessons, which will take less of your time with more appropiate material.

    Requirements

    • Valid MIT ID or proof of MIT Community status (you can bring one non-MIT guest).
    • MUST have swimming ability (everyone sailing), no exceptions. You should be able to meet the standard MITNA swimming requirement, but don't need to present proof.
    • Come dressed for sailing: Wear sneakers and clothes that you don't mind getting soaked in the Muddy Charles water.
    • Registration:
      • Pre-registration: you can Pre-Register in person at the Sailing Pavilion. You must show up by the time listed on the Pre-registration Sheet to retain your spot. Afterwards all available spots will be opened to walk-ins. Absolutely no phone, e-mail or online reservations! If you choose to pre-register you must do so in person.
      • Walk-in: you can also show up First-come first-serve. The class is usually over-subscribed, so show up early.

Before the class: We recommend that you watch the Open Course Ware Videos and practice the Stunsail Tack Bend and Bowline knots (Animated Knots).

    Description

Sunday sessions are taught concurrently from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM & 9:30 AM to approximately 2:30 PM, so be ready for a full morning of intense sailing instruction! You must attend from the beginning and are expected to commit to the entire class (up to 2:30pm).

During the Sunday classes two people sail in each Tech Dinghy.

We fit as much training and experience sailing as possible into one long session.

The following times are estimates for the 9:30 session; the 9:00 session starts earlier and covers the same material but in a different order.

    9:00-9:30Registration.
9:15amPre-registrants for the 9:30 session must show up by 9:15am or forfeit their spots.
    9:30am-11:30amLectures & Demos

Lecture begins with explaining how the Pavilion works (general tour, front desk, sailing cards). Then we introduce you to the basics of sailing: wind direction, the boat, the sail, steering, etc.

The demos in this section cover where to sit in the boat, how the boat moves/heels, and demos of maneuvers by experienced sailors.

    11:30am-12:30pmBoat rigging and unrigging

First you are shown a demo of how to rig the boat. The demo covers everything from stepping the mast to adjusting the sail rigging. After the demo you get to finish rigging your own boat.

Pre-homework - you are encouraged to learn the following knots before the class:

  • Stunsail Tack Bend
  • Bowline
  • 12:30pm-1:30pmSailing!

Two people per boat go sailing in a Tech Dinghy. Initially one person will steer (skipper) and the other person will balance the boat (crew) and handle the mainsail. The two people will swap positions so that each gets at least 30 minutes of each position. As time and ability permits, each person (as skipper) may handle both steering and trimming the sail.

    1:30pm-2:30pmUn-rigging your boat, debrief.

You'll land at the dock, unrig your boat, and stow everything back in its place. We'll finish class with a short summary and a description of What's Next
