Sailing Instructions
1. ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY
This regatta is open to all current and former MIT Sailing Team members and their families. Upon arrival at the MIT Sailing Pavilion, please check in at the desk. Please confirm at check in whether you would like to sail and provide your preferred position in the boat (skipper or crew).
2. RULES
The regatta will be governed by the sailing rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) except where modified by the Notice of Race or Sailing Instructions.
3. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS
Notices to the competitors will be posted on the official notice board located east of the lobby in the Shore School.
4. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE
Signals made ashore will be hailed verbally by the Race Committee and posted to the notice board in the Shore School.
5. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
1200 Meet and Greet Lunch with the 2022-23 Sailing Team at the Pavilion

6. RACING AREAS
The racing area shall be the Lower Charles River Basin in front of the MIT Sailing Pavilion Dock.
7. THE COURSES
All courses sailed will be Windward—Leewards with 3, 4, or 5 legs. The windward mark shall be followed by an offset mark and all leeward roundings shall be gates. All rounding marks shall be orange balls. Course diagrams will be posted on the official notice board.
8. PROTESTS AND BREAKDOWNS
Protests are strongly discouraged in the spirit of the event. We encourage all competitors to sail clean and handle penalties on the water.
9. THE START
The start shall be between a yellow ball and a committee boat displaying an orange flag. The I-flag penalty shall be used after a general recall.
10. THE FINISH
When finishing upwind, the finish line shall be between the upwind mark and the offset. When finishing downwind, the finish shall be between the starting ball and a staff displaying an orange flag.
11. FORMAT AND SCORING
A rotation sheet will be provided at the competitors’ meeting and posted to the official notice board. Crews will be assigned a boat at the competitors’ meeting. Skippers will be assigned a starting boat, and will rotate up one number every race. Rotations will take place MIT sailing pavilion docks. Scores will be recorded individually for both the skipper and crew for each race.
12. BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
Racing will take place in FJs or 420s (tbd, based on wind) provided by the MIT Sailing Pavilion. Redress will not be given for any delay or breakdown determined to result from adjusting the rigging.
