Description

“A Taste of Maine”

August 5th - August 7th

Before Mashnee begins her sail back down the coast, we will squeeze in a few days of sailing in Penobscot Bay. We will be stopping off in Rockland, Camden, and North Haven, but as always, our itinerary is subject to change. Exact times for the proposed itinerary are TBD, but please plan to be in Maine by 8am on August 5th.

This trip is intended to interest a wide variety of sailors within the community. Whether you are looking to build upon skills learned in over the last few seasons or enjoy the challenges that come with sailing in unfamiliar waters, I encourage you to sign up.

Crew Selection - I will be selecting 4 crew members with active sailing cards by June 15th. Guests will not be allowed on this trip given the popularity in previous years. Crew will range from beginner to experienced. Mashnee only has 4 berths, so please come prepared to sleep outside under a boom tent. We will rotate this if needed to make it as fair as possible. Please do not sign up for this event unless you can fully commit to the sail. To be considered, you must register here and also complete this questionnaire.

Transportation - I will be able to drive up 3 crew. My car may be available for return transport. The remaining crew will need to find their own way to and from Rockland or Camden. Options include:

  1. Drive a personal car

  2. Carpool

  3. Get dropped off / picked up

  4. Take a bus. The schedule to and from South Station can be viewed here.

For the sake of being able to sail as much as possible, priority may be given to those who can make it to Rockland or Camden earlier in the day on August 5th. Secure parking is available at the Maine State Ferry Terminal in Rockland for a small fee.

Food & Provisions - We will be eating both on and off the boat. Please plan on 2 breakfasts aboard, 3 lunches aboard, and 3 dinners ashore. We will also provision for snacks. Provisioning should ideally take place before we depart for Maine, but provisioning in Maine is an option if needed, but will delay out departure. No glass will be allowed aboard.

Costs - All shared costs will be split among the group. This will include: mooring / dock fees, fuel, and provisioning. Crew will be expected to pay their own transportation costs (or chip in for gas), launch fees, taxis and shore meals. $200 per person is a good starting point for planning purposes.

Personal Items - Crew will be expected to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, appropriate clothing for Maine’s hot days and cool nights, non marking & dedicated boat shoes, towel, and personal toiletries. All items should fit into one soft duffle bag as storage is very limited (It’s okay if your sleeping bag does not fit!). Hard luggage will not be allowed aboard. Flotation devices and foul weather gear will be provided if needed, however we do not supply footwear.

Sunday, August 5th - We will carpool to either Rockland or Camden, Maine. We will meet at the MIT Sailing Pavilion  at a predetermined time for those driving / carpooling. Provisions and personal items will be loaded onto Mashnee upon arriving in Maine. Depending on when we meet, we may set sail or we may wait until Monday morning to depart. Possible options may include:

  • Rockland to Camden***

  • Camden to Rockland*

  • Rockland to North Haven ****

  • Sunset sail in Penobscot Bay**

Monday, August 6th - Set sail from current location. Possible options may include:

  • Rockland to North Haven*

  • Camden to North Haven**

  • North Haven to Camden***

Tuesday, August 7th - Sail to Rockland or Camden for swap out with delivery crew. Current crew are welcome to stay aboard until 8am on August 8th or drive back to Boston. Delivery crew arriving by bus will need to be in Rockland or Camden on the evening of August 7th. This will allow for an early departure for day 1 of the delivery to Salem, Ma.

If you have any further questions, please contact me via email. I look forward to sailing with you in Maine this summer!
