Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any current restrictions on registering for sailing classes at MIT?

>>> At the moment, everyone in the MIT Community who has an MIT Recreation/DAPER membership can register for sailing classes.

Current MIT Students are automatically eligible.

We do require that everyone going out in a boat be able to Swim sufficiently .

>>>> I was on the Priority Queue in 2023 (or earlier). Do I need to sign up again?

Yes. Each year we start fresh since most of those on last year's list have either taken a class or are no longer at MIT.

>>>> Class Stats: How is it looking for me to get into a class soon?

There will be limited availability in the Spring given many events going on, but we will have many opportunities starting in June.

The Mid-Week 1-2-3 classes tend to be a little easier to get in to than the Sunday All-in-One classes.

(Sunday 9:45 am - 3:30 pm)  >>   Must be able to attend full day.

When registering for a class:

Read the Description info on the event sign-up, then use the menu above it to get to the Registration page.

Sign up anytime before Registration closes at 10:00 am. Confirmations based on position in Priority Queue.

It will help if you are already logged into your Sailing Pavilion Account and have filled in your Account info.

(Membership Type can be Virtual, but better if Normal for full setup – Swim Test initialed - to get a sailing card later.)

Information List Emails - when will they stop?

>>> Once you complete a Learn-to-Sail class (or the Experienced Intro), your entry here will be set to Confirmed

and you should not get further LTS emails (unless requested).

Can also email me or just Cancel to avoid further notes. List will close down altogether at the end of the year.

We may set up a second mailing list for Advanced Sailing Classes Information later on for those interested.

After I take a Learn-to-Sail Class, how do I get to sail the Lynx Catboats?

>>> After taking the Learn-to-Sail class you will have a Swim Rating.

Ideally should practice and build experience and expertise in the Tech Dinghies and then get your Provisional Rating.

     http://sailing.mit.edu/card/ratings.php

After getting the Provisional Rating, suggest you review the Lynx Videos online, and then ask for help from the Dockstaff to get started.

Can also take an advanced Lynx class once we start to offer those.
