Description

Registration for the Tuesday June 7th Learn-to-Sail Class 1 will begin at 8:00 am on Friday June 3rd.

>>> You should only register for Class 1 if you can make Class 2 the next day. <<<

Class 1: Classroom lecture, tour, and on-the-dock demonstration

This is the first in a series of three Learn-to-Sail classes presented on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday evenings. Best if you can take at least Classes 1 and 2 on consecutive nights.

Requirements

  • You must bring a valid MIT ID.
  • You must be able to swim — no exceptions. You should be able to meet the standard MITNA swimming requirement, but do not need to present proof.
  • Pre-registration is required. Click the "Registration" link above to register.

Before the class

We recommend that you watch the OpenCourseWare Videos. They are a lot of fun and will serve as a great introduction to sailing. Also, find a piece of rope and practice the Stunsail Tack Bend and Bowline knots.

Description

In Class 1, we will cover the following :

  • a general introduction to the MIT Sailing program,
  • an explanation of the rules, policies and procedures you need to know to start sailing,
  • the basics of how to sail a small sailboat,
  • a tour of the Sailing Pavilion and its boats and facilities,
  • a demonstration of how to rig and sail the Tech Dinghy.
  • how to tie a few important knots.

Class 2

After you have completed Class 1, be sure to sign up for Class 2 on a following Wednesday evening for the on-the-water portion of the class.
