Description
SIGN-UP STARTING APRIL 15th
Crossing the Charles is going to be a monumental celebration culminating with a parade across the river at 130-230 on Saturday May 7. The Firefly fleet will have a designated 'admiral' to choreograph some moves as the group advances from Boston to Cambridge. This sign-up is for the Firefly fleet only. It will be a ton of fun and you will want to be a part of seeing every single MIT sailboat on the water simultaneously.
One person per boat should have at least the Provisional rating.
Firefly and 420 Sailors-
We actually have a very promising forecast for the crossing of the Charles on this Saturday. Fireflies will depart from the Gloucester St Landing Dock at 1440 on Saturday afternoon. Please invite a friend or two to join you in your boat or in other boats if they become available with ‘no shows’. The wind is forecast to be from the east at 8-10 knots with the sun breaking out, too.
Judges will be set up at the center of the Mass Ave bridge and you are welcome to dress up in costume and/ or arrange choreography for the group of Firefly and 420 sailors. Maybe tack on whistle, jibe on two whistles or sail in circles….? Consider a pre-sail rendezvous to make decision on choreography . Perhaps meet at pavilion in front of Bay 1 at 1300? All boats should be at the Gloucester St dock area on the Boston shore by 1410 at the latest.
Thanks again for participating and impressing the MIT community with how many sailors are enjoying this sport. After sailing through the parade, please return to the pavilion for unrigging. There will be tons of food and refreshments at the Crossing awards ceremony along the Cambridge shore between the pavilion and Mass Ave immediately following at 1530 The pavilion will be closed down after the marine parade as the fireworks will be loaded and charged on the barges at that time. Fireworks will start with a short burst at 2035 and another longer burst at 2135. Remnants will be fired at 2200. Again, the pavilion will be closed for the evening for a wedding party and viewing may be done from the parkland as Mem Drive will remain closed. Fireworks will also be lit off from all the Maclaurin Buildings surrounding Killian Court.
