Description

The original Maine cruise plan has been cancelled. During Leg one we will instead be sailing up to Portland, where we hope to stay for a night, and then sail back to Boston. We will return to Boston by Sunday afternoon.

--------

Hello to all!

This is the first leg of the XD Maine trip. Participants for this leg should be interested in sailing off the coast of Maine, as opposed to cruising and visiting islands and some of the towns and cities (those are the later legs). This sail is intended as an introduction to longer-distance offshore sailing; we will sail directly from Boston to Northeast Harbor, Maine. I expect the trip to take 36-48 hours, during which we will be sailing around the clock and standing watch. This leg is for MITNA members with significant bluewater experience (on X Dimension or other 30-ft or larger cruising sailboats) who are interested in a taste of passage-making.  Each participant should count on chipping in $50-80 for provisions and docking fees. You can sign up for as any legs as you like, but please let us know your preferred leg if you do.

We are hoping to select the crew for this trip early in the spring so that everyone can make plans; this means there is an expectation that if you sign up for the trip and are selected, you will come. There are many moving parts to coordinate to make these trips happen, and we expect that the crew will be as committed to this trip as are the skippers.

If you have any questions please contact the organizer, Scott Dynes, at scott@dynes.org .

The current plan for this leg is:

Thursday August 11:
Leave Boston Waterboat Marina around 5 PM and arrive at Northeast Harbor Saturday Morning.

Saturday/Sunday: there are many choices - sail up Somes Sound, sail to Bar Harbor, hike in Acadia National Park, explore the island using the free bus service.

Sunday August 14:
Exchange crews. This would likely take place in Northeast Harbor.

The plan is that the replacement crew will be driving a car up from Boston; this crew would drive it back to Boston.
