Description

The class will start at the advertised time with the rigging and general board handling demo. We try to give students as much board time as possible. However, since we have four boards available for the class, we may have to "share" the boards during the class.

To prepare for class please note:

  • You must have a swim rating and have taken a learn-to-sail class in order to sign up.
  • The class will be about three hours long and concentrate on rigging a windsurf and general handling.
  • Be very comfortable getting wet: you will do a lot of swimming during this class! (bring a towel ^_^)
  • Please review the intro to windsurfing videos here https://vimeo.com/search?q=intro+to+windsurfing+part%3A

Watching the videos is required; the more familiar you are with the principles, the more time you'll have to windsurf (vs. swimming).

When learning to windsurf it is very useful to understand the basic ideas behind sailing. Please be fully proficient with the following terms as they apply to windsurfing:

  • Tacking and jibing.
  • Understanding of going upwind and downwind.
  • Know the major parts of a rig: main sail, boom, downhaul, outhaul

If you already know how to windsurf and would like to learn how to rig and use the equipment at the MIT sailing pavilion, please come to the first portion of this class where we demo rigging of the sails. In this case, you don't have to sign up for the class or register. Just show up!

NOTE : If wind/weather conditions are not favorable, this event may get postponed.

PRO-TIP: Footwear is not necessary, but helpful. Even hiking sandals give extra grip, however surfing booties keep your feet warm on cold days.
