Description

X Dimension will be going on its annual tour of Boston Light — the first lighthouse site in North America, and the only one left in the country to retain an official keeper. There couldn't be a tour last year due to renovations on the lighthouse. We will tour the lighthouse tower and see the inside of the French-made second-order Fresnel lens that produces the lighthouse's beam throughout Boston harbor, day and night. If lucky, we will also see the photo album in which 19th-century MIT students worked to produce a better fog signal by trying to understand the dynamics of sound as it propagates over the foggy Massachusetts Bay. (They failed.)

Please be on the pier at the Boston Waterboat Marina by 9:30 a.m. We will go ashore at Little Brewster Island between 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., and tour the lighthouse and eat lunch there. There will be time to sail of course on the way there and back.
