Description
In this 2-1/2 hour class you will learn “What’s Next” after your Learn To Sail class. Intermediate Sailing plus practice will help prepare you for the sailing, tacking, and gybing sections of your Provisional rating. It will make you a more competent, more confident sailor!
- Equipment check (telltales)
- Where is the wind
- What is the weather
- Advanced rigging details
- Sailing theory lecture
- Effective & efficient upwind & downwind sailing
- Proper sail trim
- Boat/crew weight trim
- Centerboard trim
- Proper use of the tiller extension while sailing, tacking, and gybing
- Recap
There will be a brief classroom session on concepts, then into single-handed Tech dinghies for on-the-water practice & coaching from volunteers and staff in motorboats. We endeavor to have sufficient coaches on hand to join you in your boat if closer coaching is valuable.
Due to the close, on-the-water coaching, class size is limited. You are welcome to return with last-minute registration for additional coaching if there are open spots the day of any class. Your coaches may sign off on some of the sailing aspects of your Provisional rating that you demonstrate mastery of during class.
Requirements
- You must have a current, valid MIT Sailing Card
- Provisional Rating is NOT required. Have sailed 3-5 times or more, independently, after your Learn-To-Sail class
- Know your knots
- Know how to rig, launch, and derig a Tech Dinghy independently!
Registration
Registering for this event confirms your entry into the class. Registration is first come, first served. Priority Queue does not apply.

- Come dressed and ready to sail. Bring a rain jacket if there’s a chance of showers. Heavy rain may force cancellation due to coaching communication challenges on the water
