Description

Sailors,

I will be hosting several shore-based classes aimed at getting Bluewater Crew candidates started on their checklist. The classes will run until about 6:15 in the classroom and then we will move to the dock to wrap things up. You must have met the pre-reqs below to have your skills sheet signed off. Priorities will be given to sailors actively pursuing the Crew Rating, however these sessions are open to anyone looking to learn new skills or interested in getting involved with the program.

  • Attain the MIT Provisional rating

  • Complete the Nauticed.org Skipper course, (or ASA 103, US Sailing “Basic Cruising”, or similar) and email your certificate of completion to bluewater-skippers@mit.edu. MITNA has arranged a discounted $25 rate for this online course. See the Bluewater Crew Rating Checklist for the discount code. When you email your certificate, it is best to copy at least one of the current skippers directly to avoid delays of email from a non-member to the list.

  • Read very thoroughly the U.S. Coast Guard guide to navigation markers

  • Print the bluewater crew rating checklist.

See Bluewater Crew wiki for more info on the requirements.

Given the limitations of teaching opportunities on shore, we will be focusing on the following skills:

  • Knots

  • Familiarizing yourself with the marine VHF radio & issuing a distress call

  • Familiarizing yourself with Boston Harbor

  • Basic chart work

  • Rules of the Road

  • Aids to Navigation

If you have any questions, please feel welcome to reach out to me.

Ryan
