Description

Registration for the set of Learn-to-Sail Classes 1-2-3 on Tuesday Sep 19th through Thursday Sep 21st will run from around 8:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday Sep 18th. (Please ignore the times above.)

Beginners must be available to take Classes 1, 2, and 3 on consecutive nights.

 

If you are an EXPERIENCED SAILOR who is sitting in on Class 1 (and will not need to take Class 2), then you should NOT register for Class 1.

However, please register for the Intro for Experienced Sailors. Then just check-in on class day and tell us you will be sitting in on the class.

 

Class 1: Classroom lecture, tour, and on-the-dock demonstration (with knots and rigging practice).

This is the first in a series of three Learn-to-Sail classes presented on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday evenings.

Requirements

  • You must bring a valid MIT ID.
  • You must be able to swim — no exceptions. You should be able to meet the standard MITNA swimming requirement, but do not need to present proof.

Before the class

We recommend that you watch the Tech Dinghy rigging and sailing videos. They are a lot of fun and will serve as a great introduction to sailing. Also, find a piece of rope and practice the Stunsail Tack Bend and Bowline knots.

Description

In Class 1, we will cover the following :

  • a general introduction to the MIT Sailing program,
  • an explanation of the rules, policies and procedures you need to know to start sailing,
  • the basics of how to sail a small sailboat,
  • a tour of the Sailing Pavilion and its boats and facilities,
  • a demonstration of how to rig and sail the Tech Dinghy.
  • how to tie a few important knots.

 

Class 2: On the Dock Demonstration and Sailing

Second in a series of three Learn-to-Sail classes presented on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday evenings. 

Requirements

  • You must have taken Class 1 the day before.
  • You should know how to tie the Stunsail Tack Bend and Bowline knots.
  • Come dressed for sailing. You should wear sneakers in the boat. Keep in mind that your clothes might get wet with muddy Charles River water.

Before the class

Review your handouts from Class 1. Also can review the basic Tech Dinghy sailing videos.

Description

Students will be paired up, two to a boat. Everyone will rig their boat and make ready to sail. Your instructor will explain your sailing course and will review proper sailing technique. He or she will demonstrate launching and landing at the dock and basic sailing maneuvers. Participants will launch their boats one at at time, sail to the mark, tack around it, and then sail back to the dock to land. Instructors on the dock will assist with launching and landing and an instructor in a motorboat will assist you on the water.

 

Class 3: Additional Sailing Instruction and Practice

Third in a series of three Learn-to-Sail classes presented on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday evenings. 

Requirements

  • You must have taken Class 2 the day before.
  • Come dressed for sailing.

Description

Students will go out alone or be paired up, two to a boat. Everyone will rig a boat and make ready to sail. Your instructor will explain your sailing course and will review proper sailing technique. He or she will demonstrate additional concepts including gybing, using the tiller extension, working upwind and downwind. Instructors will assist mainly from a motorboat while you are on the water.
