Description

Class 3: Additional Sailing Instruction and Practice

This is the third in a series of three Learn-to-Sail classes presented on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday evenings.

Requirements

  • You must be able to swim — no exceptions. You should be able to meet the standard MITNA swimming requirement, but do not need to present proof.
  • You must have taken Class 2 or had other prior sailing experience.
  • You must know how to rig a Tech Dinghy and should have basic experience with launching, tacking, and landing.
  • Come dressed for sailing. You should wear sneakers in the boat. Keep in mind that your clothes might get wet with muddy Charles River water.
  • Pre-registration is required for this class.

Before the class

Go out sailing on your own if possible once you have taken Class 2.

Description

Students will go out alone or be paired up, two to a boat. Everyone will rig a boat and make ready to sail. Your instructor will explain your sailing course and will review proper sailing technique. He or she will demonstrate additional concepts including gybing, using the tiller extension, working upwind and downwind. Instructors will assist mainly from a motorboat while you are on the water.
