From Antarctica to the North-West Passage: Circumnavigating the Americas

Sun 13-Oct-201918:00-18:45

Description

We are delighted to have a lecture by two of our newest MIT sailors, professor Jan Martin Nordbotten and Cecilie Evjen, on their adventures sailing around the globe:

"This talk follows the sail yacht Lady Free, as we circumnavigated the Americas from our base in Norway. The journey took us via Africa and South America, as far south as Antarctica. After passing Cape Horn, we sailed back North through the Pacific, visiting Tahiti and Hawaii before Alaska. The last stretch took us through the North-West Passage to Greenland, and across the Atlantic again in harsh September storms.

Lady Free is a 40 foot Norwegian wooden gaff-rigged cutter, a kindred spirit to MIT's Lynx Catboats. The designer, Colin Archer, was famous for his sea-worthy ships, having designed not only Nansens ship for reaching the North Pole, but also search and rescue vessels for Norway."

This event will take place in the Pavilion Shore School at 6:00 pm on Sunday, Oct 13th. (Perfect while waiting to go out on your moonlight sail!)
