Description

Hello to all!

Thanks to those of you who have responded to previous emails; now is the time to sign up for the Maine trip.

This is the first leg of the XD Maine trip, which will be primarily sailing (as opposed to the following legs, which will be primarily cruising). Participants for this leg should be interested in offshore sailing. This sail is intended as an extended introduction to offshore cruising for MITNA members with bluewater experience (on X Dimension or other 30-ft or larger cruising sailboats). Please note that we will be sailing for at least a day and a half in potentially bumpy seas, so be sure to consider your susceptibility to seasickness. Participants can bring one guest; this guest should have equivalent sailing interests and experience and will need to purchase an MIT Sailing Race membership ($40) prior to the sail. Each participant should also count on chipping in $50-60 for provisions. You can sign up for as any segments as you like, but please let us know your preference if you do.

We are hoping to select the crew for this trip pretty early so that everyone can make plans; this means there is an expectation that if you sign up for the trip and are selected, you will come. There are many moving parts to coordinate to make these trips happen, and we expect that the crew will be as committed to this trip as are the skippers.

If you have any questions please contact the organizer, Scott Dynes, at scott@dynes.org .

The current plan is:

Thurs Aug 14-
Leave Waterboat Marina in Boston in the evening for Northeast Harbor, Mt. Desert Is., Maine (This is where Acadia National Park is). This trip is ~ 175 NM as the fish swims, and at 6 Kts will take ~ 30 hours assuming good winds. This should be a good ~long-distance sail; we would certainly have a watch schedule.
End day 1

Fri Aug 15
At sea.
End day 2

Sat Aug 17
Arrive in Northeast Harbor. Rest up, clean the boat. Explore NE harbor and take the free shuttle all around the island (http://www.exploreacadia.com/routefinder.htm; NE harbor is the terminus for lines 5 & 6). If there is time and interest, sail up Somes Sound, the fjard on the Atlantic coast. Overnight in NE harbor.
End day 3

Sunday Aug 17
(Example itineracy) Sail to Bar Harbor/ around Frenchmans Bay or top Southwest Harbor and around the local islands. Exchange crews.

The plan is that the replacement crew will be driving a car up from Boston; this crew would drive it back to Boston.
