Description

Registration for the Aug 19th Wednesday Class 1 will begin around 8:00 am on Aug 11th.

Class 1: Classroom lecture, tour, and on-the-dock demonstration

This is the first in a series of two Learn-to-Sail classes presented on Wednesday evenings.

Requirements

  • You must bring a valid MIT ID.
  • You must be able to swim — no exceptions. You should be able to meet the standard MITNA swimming requirement, but do not need to present proof.
  • Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, but walk-ins will be accepted for Class 1. If you have not registered, please consider showing up early so that the dock staff can get you signed up for the class before it starts. Click the "Registration" link above to register.

Before the class

We recommend that you watch the OpenCourseWare Videos. They are a lot of fun and will serve as a great introduction to sailing. Also, find a piece of rope and practice the Stunsail Tack Bend and Bowline knots.

Description

In Class 1, we will cover the following :

  • a general introduction to the MIT Sailing program,
  • an explanation of the rules, policies and procedures you need to know to start sailing,
  • the basics of how to sail a small sailboat,
  • a tour of the Sailing Pavilion and its boats and facilities,
  • a demonstration of how to rig and sail the Tech Dinghy.
  • how to tie a few important knots.

Class 2

After you have completed Class 1, be sure to sign up for Class 2 on a following Wednesday evening for the on-the-water portion of the class.
