Notice of Race

1 RULES

1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing and Appendix D- Team Racing Rules.

1.2 The prescriptions of the US national authority will apply.

1.3 The class rules of the intercollegiate dinghy class as described in The Procedural Rules for Intercollegiate Sailing Competition Fall 2005 - Spring 2008 will apply.

2 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY

2.1 The regatta is open to the first forty eight (48) teams who submit three completed Entry Form for each boat on their team and pay the full entry fee electronically. A team is not considered registered until all three boats have submitted their entry fee. Accepted entries will be updated as they are received and may be viewed at: Teams attending starting on April 2007. Do not attempt to deliver entries to the MIT Sailing Pavilion.

2.2 Team names are strongly encouraged to reflect a club, scholastic, traditional or geographic affiliation. This will greatly assist in marketing team racing to potential sponsors.

2.3 Six team entries will be reserved for teams with all members non-US citizens. Six team entries will be reserved for teams with all members under age 19 on June 23, 2007. Six team entries will be reserved for teams with all members with an average age of 35 or older. If these entries are unfilled on June 17, they will be given away on a first come, first served basis irregardless of classification.

3 FEES

3.1 Entry fee for a boat with only current college undergraduate or high school students is $80/boat.

3.2 Entry fee for any boat with one competitor who has voluntarily judged or provided RC management at MIT, BU or Harvard sailing events during the 2007 intercollegiate season is $40/boat.
Entry fee for any boat with both competitors who have voluntarily judged or provided RC management at MIT, BU or Harvard sailing events during the 2007 intercollegiate season is free.

3.3 Entry fee for all others is $100/ boat.

3.4 Spring Intercollegiate Events that need your assistance are as follows:

  • H, MIT and BUs Boston Dinghy Challenge Cup Intersectional - March 24 and 25
  • MITs Oberg Trophy - March 31 and April 1
  • MITs Lynne Marchiando Team Race Intersectional - umpired - April 7 and 8
  • Hs NE Team Race Championship - umpired - April 28 and 29
  • BUs George Morris Intersectional - April 21 and 22
  • BUs Presidents Trophy for Women - April 7 and 8

  • 3.5 A damage deposit check of $100/ boat will be secured on your credit card. This damage deposit amount does not limit the liability of a competitor for damages to the equipment.

    3.6 Additional guest tickets for Red Bones Barbecue dinner on Saturday evening will be available on a limited basis, first come, first served until sold out for $15 each. Each competitor will receive a ticket with their entry.

    4 SCHEDULE

    Friday, June 22, 2007
    1300-1700Pick-up races and practice for early arrivers.
    1700-1800Check in and regatta T shirt distribution for teams who are assigned to Friday.
    1830-SunsetRacing until dark thirty. Additional check in and T shirts for teams who are spectating and assigned to race on Saturday morning.
    Social Activities
    TBDWe are trying to secure a band to play on the roof deck and will provide pizza and beverages on the dock for competitors and spectators.

    0700- 0730Check in and regatta T shirt distribution for teams who did not race on Friday.
    0800Racing commences promptly for all other teams.
    1000Teams which raced on Friday should report and be ready to race.
    Social Activities
    1730-1900Catered Redbones dinner on the roof deck.
    2100-2330Band and dancing at a site to be determined by Ryan Costello and the Broken Tiles.

    0900-1500Racing, racing and more racing.
    1500-1600Leftover dinner and beverages available for all who watch the finals and help organizers put away and return borrowed fleets. Sail offs in front of dock for the following teams at Clydesdale weight. Additional water jugs shall be available for all finalists.
    1630Awards for top team in all divisions and overall champ from sail-offs:
    • The top international team
    • The top master open team
    • The top youth team
    • The top Clydesdale team
    • The top master Clydesdale team
    • The top open team

    5 MINIMUM CREW WEIGHT

    5.1 The combined weight of the entire six person Clydesdale team shall not be less than 960 - (# of female skippers)* 15 pounds. The combined weight of the entire six person open team shall not be less than 870 - (# of female skippers)* 15 pounds. Thus, a team with 2 women skippers would have a weight minimum of 840 lbs. The team shall carry penalty weight if the combined weight fails to meet the minimum. Penalty weight will be one pound of corrector for each pound of weight less than their minimum.

    5.2 Providing penalty corrector weights shall be the responsibility of the competitors. Only water in sealed jugs shall be acceptable. Competitors shall carry the penalty corrector weights in every race, from yacht to yacht, and shall secure them in the cockpit of each yacht with their own tie off lines.

    5.3 Competitors shall have access to the official scale to determine combined weight throughout the event. Competitors will be weighed in a light shirt, shorts and no socks or shoes.

    5.4 Teams shall be subject to weigh-ins and reweighs. The weigh-ins shall be at the discretion of the OA, RC, umpires and/or jury if any. Teams requested to weigh-in shall report immediately and directly to the weigh-in area in the clothing used to sail their last race. Teams not reporting immediately to the weigh-in or teams attempting to circumvent the weigh-in procedure by ingesting food or drink, showering, changing or adding clothing or any other means of changing their weight shall be requested to immediately leave the regatta and their races shall be forfeited.

    5.5 Underweight teams shall be given losses in all races sailed between their previous weigh-in and being found underweight. If they have not yet been weighed then they shall be given losses in all races up to that point. In the event there are two teams who have been given losses under this SI in the same race there shall be no win given for that race.

    5.6 Team weights shall not be subject to a competitor protest. This changes RRS 60.1.

    6 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

    The sailing instructions will be available at the regatta website as well as posted on the notice board at the sailing pavilion.

    7 VENUE

    Racing will be conducted from the MIT sailing pavilion on the Charles River lower basin.

    8 SCORING and FORMAT

    8.1 The format will be a Modified Swiss League. The goal for this event is to provide as many quality team races as possible between evenly matched teams, have lots of fun and to end with a Match Bracket Sunday afternoon, consisting of at least a Semi-final and Finals.

    8.2 Scoring will be in accordance with Appendix D, except as modified by the Sailing Instructions.

    9 SAFETY

    All competitors shall wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD at all times while on the water. International competitors may borrow these from the organizing authority.

    10 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

    Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

    11 Housing

    Limited Housing has been made available in the Senior House dormitory on the MIT campus directly across the street from the sailing pavilion. More information on the room reservation system is available at:
