MITNA Sailing Update - March 2008

Fri 07-Mar-200809:30-09:30

Description

In this edition we will highlight the following topics. Please scroll down to learn more details.

Opening Day for Rec Sailing is Tuesday, April 1.

For the 72nd consecutive season the MIT Sailing Pavilion will open on the Tuesday after spring break. Of course you will se a dinghy in Lobby 10 during that week as a reminder to come out and enjoy the freedom of the river. The past season was so successful, it will be challenging to keep pace yet we are well poised to do so. All of the Rhodes are launched, their cradles disassembled, the racing dinghies rigged and set out on the east dock and the final group of tech dinghies are getting the love and attention which they deserve. Please take a peek at some of our accomplishments in 2007 with this brief summary.

Of course, the sailing pavilion is special because it is so generously cared for by the many volunteers who diligently assist almost 20% of the entire student body in learning how to sail. Perhaps this year you might consider helping out? Please drop a note to mitna-learn@mit.edu

Sailing Team is presently ranked 10th in country across all divisions.

Undergrads on the sailing team have been working out daily all winter and are readying for their third consecutive weekend of competition. An early thaw on the rivah chuck has provided us with a great opportunity for practice. It’s chilly out there as the sun is setting, however, both coed and women’s squads are anticipating a competitive run for the National Titles this spring season and a little frozen spray won’t get in their way. This weekend the teams will be racing at St Marys College in Maryland and at Salve Regina in Newport, RI.

Campaign to renew entire fleet and replace docks will soon kick off.

The Institute is poised to grant us permission to fund raise for a new floating dock system and a renewal of the entire fleet of boats. With their endorsement we are hoping to put the sailing pavilion’s new fleet onto platforms which will go up and down with the wildly fluctuating river heights which we have been experiencing in recent years. For example, the water level is so low today that I can not reach the deck of a boat while sitting with my feet dangling over the front of our dock. Our goal is to accomplish, build and install this renewal in time for the 75th anniversary of the sailing program at MIT in the Spring of 2011. Many more details will be forthcoming.

Free North U Seminar for current MITNA members on Saturday, March 29.

North U will be hosting their annual seminar at MIT this year and we are offering free admission to all current MITNA members. This year’s presentation will focus on tactics and rules which will be hosted in 6-120 on Saturday, March 29 from 9-4. Dave Dellenbaugh will be the lecturer and he has been involved with 3 America’s Cup campaigns as tactician. Most notably Dave was the tactician and starting helmsman for MIT’s own Bill Koch when he won the America’s Cup on America Cubed. Dave has won the US Match Race Champs, Team Race Champs and been a world champion in both the Lightning and Thistle classes.

You MUST email me your request to be put on the MIT door list before Tuesday, March 25 at 1700.

Breakfast and lunch are provided and all MIT participants should bring $15 check or cash with them to cover that expense. Samantha Scolamiero [samajane@worldnet.att.net] will be organizing the catering and helping with the details of AV equipment and trash. Please coordinate and plan to give her a hand as the event gets closer.

Student Employment opportunities available

Employment opportunities to join our dockstaff during the summer months are available now. Please write to Coach Matt Lindblad <mitsail@mit.edu> if you might be interested in a position with us. Generally we need extra help daily from 3 until sunset on MO, WE, FR and noon to sunset on TU, TR and weekends.

Tartan 37 will be available for sailing in Boston Harbor and beyond this year

From our Bluewater Captain, Matthew Wall
Spring is in the air, and you know what that means!  Snow on April 1st, lots of rain, and ... work parties to get ‘nevermore’ ready to go back in the water.  Nevermore is the 37' tartan donated to mit in the summer of 2007 by alumnus, Ralph Reis.  The boat is currently in a yard in Quincy. We are in the process of planning work parties for March and April. Watch the mit sailing calendar - most work parties will be on the weekends, but there might be one or two during the week.  Details about what work needs to be done is on the mit sailing wiki in the bluewater section (go to MITNA -> Wiki -> bluewater at sailing.mit.edu).

If you have questions about mit bluewater sailing or if you are wondering how to get involved, visit the wiki then subscribe to the mailman list bluewater@mit.edu.
