The MIT Varsity Sailing team finished a solid 5th on the Semi-Finals, and QUALIFIED FOR THE FINALS for the first time since 2003. Go Beavers!

MIT Press-Release

The MIT sailing team has qualified for the Inter-collegiate Sailing Association (ISCA) Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship in Newport, R.I. on June 2-4. For the first time since 2003, the Engineers earned a berth by placing a solid fifth place out of 18 teams at the ISCA Western Semifinal hosted by the University of Southern California this past weekend.

Leading the Engineers were B-Division skipper Brooks Reed and crew Ellie Hass, who finished third in their circuit. Senior co-captains Jack Field and Julie Arsenault battled a difficult fleet to finish ninth in A-Division, with Josh Leighton and Karlen Ruleman subbing for two races.

"This wasn't just an accomplishment for the six sailors who sailed at Long Beach, this was an accomplishment for the entire team," said MIT coach Matt Lindblad.

April 27, 2008 – Long Beach, CA - The sailors at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championship, Western Semi-Final had another great day of racing. The University of Southern California and the US Sailing Center – Long Beach hosted the event that was sailed next to the South Wing of the Belmont Pier in Long Beach, California. A total of 18 teams from around the country were in attendance, of which the top nine finishers move forward to the Finals to be held in Newport, RI in early June. After a brief delay, racing got underway in 5kts of offshore breeze. After the first two races the offshore breeze died and the sea breeze filled for the remainder of the day.

Georgetown continued to sail well and won the event by 15 points. Chris Behm and Carly Chamberlain won A-Division while their counterparts Charlie Buckingham and Alex Taylor finished second in B-Division. Head coach Mike Callahan said, ”USC ran a great event. The conditions favored our strengths and we had great weather reports which made us very comfortable going on the water.”

Meanwhile, the competition in the middle of the fleet was very close as the teams were fighting to finish in the top nine and move forward to the finals to be held in Newport, RI in early June. Going into the final two races there was twenty point spread between NY Maritime in eighth and Hawaii in tenth place.

In the end, South Florida moved into eighth and NY Maritime held onto ninth. NY Maritime Coach Blaine Pedlow says, “We really looked at this event in terms of wins and losses. A top ten finish was a win and our goal was to have more wins than losses. Our B-Division had a great set in the middle of the day with two firsts which really gave us a boost.”

Georgetown, Yale, Charleston, Brown, MIT, Roger Williams, Kings Point, South Florida and NY Maritime all qualified for the finals. Despite being the local team, USC had a rough day of sailing and dropped from eighth to eleventh and missed qualifying for the finals by eighteen points.

ICSA President, Mitch Brindley said, “the event was a great success with a variety of conditions. I was really happy to see the event be so close with many teams fighting for their spot at the finals. The final regatta in Newport, RI should be exciting to watch.”

The regatta was sailed in Collegiate Flying Juniors, a 14 ft. two person boat, by mostly coed teams. For more information, results and regular updates go to: www.collegesailing.org .

Saturday Announcement

Sunny skies and warm weather greeted the sailors at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championship, Western Semi-Final. The University of Southern California and the US Sailing Center – Long Beach are hosting this event being sailed next to the South Wing of the Belmont Pier in Long Beach, California. A total of 18 teams from around the country are in attendance, of which the top nine finishers will move forward to the Finals to be held in Newport, RI in early June. After a brief delay, racing got underway in 5kts of breeze which continued to build throughout the afternoon.

Georgetown has gotten off to a quick start and is leading the regatta after 12 races. Chris Behm and Carly Chamberlain are winning A-Division while their counterparts Charlie Buckingham and Alex Taylor are winning B-Division. According to Georgetown Head Coach Mike Callahan, “Some of the keys to our success have been that the conditions have been very similar to what we sail in at Georgetown and we have not had any major errors such as an over early. We did have to spin a 720 degree penalty, but we were able to fight back to a good score in that race.”

Just behind are Yale 2nd, College of Charleston 3rd, and MIT 4th. Host USC has dropped back from 4th earlier in the day to 8th. “We are still qualifying and there is a small spread in points just ahead of us creating opportunity to move up but we need to get more consistent finished in single digits. There are still a lot of races scheduled, and anything can happen” said USC Head Coach, Mike Segerblom.

ICSA President, Mitch Brindley said, “The conditions have been very challenging. It has not been straightforward sailing because the breeze has been much more shifty and changing more often that what was many expected. It has been great to see a lot of close sailing with many teams still fighting for their spot in the top nine which will advance to the Finals. There have been plenty of surprises on the Eastern Semi-Final too with Vermont and U. Penn leading. It is really up to the sailors this year as they must qualify for the Finals to be hosted in Newport, RI.”

Racing is schedule to begin at 10:30 A.M. Sunday. Viewing is great from the South Wing of the Belmont Pier. The races will continue throughout the day and conclude at approximately 4:00 P.M. The regatta is being sailed in Collegiate Flying Juniors, a 14 ft. two person boat, by mostly coed teams. For more information, results and regular updates go to: www.collegesailing.org.
