Voice of the Oceans

Tue 02-Aug-202219:00-20:30

Description

Location: MIT Sailing Pavilion, classroom.

Speakers: Heloisa Schurmann and Wilhelm Schurmann, leaders of Voice of the Oceans, whose maritime expedition has the worldwide support of the UN Environment Programme.

Synopsis: With nearly 40 years of navigations, including three circumnavigations and several expeditions, the Schurmann family is an eyewitness to the plastic invasion of the oceans. In the late 1990s, during the Magalhães Global Adventure, tons of waste were found on abandoned Henderson Island, and in 2015, sailing with the Oriente Expedition, once again they were impressed by the large invasion of waste in the also isolated West Fayu – both in the Pacific Ocean.

From this story and more importantly from a passion for the planet's oceans, the Schurmann family leads the Voice of the Oceans initiative, whose mission is to raise awareness among the world's population about the challenge of saving and preserving the oceans, and seek solutions that can reverse the scenario of plastic invasion that is choking the planet's waters. With the global support of the environmental program UN, the Voice of the Oceans expedition will travel to around 65 destinations between Brazil and New Zealand by November 2023, including Boston and other cities on the East Coast of the United States.
