Spring 2008 Tasks

before mast re-step

• inspect top-of-mast furler, stays, swages, etc (ted, mwall)
  • as of 10may08, there is rusty patina on some stays, but no cracks or broken strands

before re-float

• renew coast guard documentation (ted, fcharles)
  • put the Certificate of Documentation aboard (ted)

• assess rudder situation
  • unsieze the rudder
  • assess/repair fibreglass cracks
  • anti-fouling paint to rudder inner surfaces

• prop and drive shaft
  • finish polishing
  • apply anti-fouling paint
  • install zincs

• replace head thru-hull fittings (tyoung, mwall)
  • head output thruhull leaks inside the hull
  • new flange/fairing on input thruhull (DONE)

• procure and install new spinnaker halyard

• engine tune-up
  • replace engine raw water inlet elbow with straight barb (ThomS)
  • replace raw-water hose from separator to pump inlet (ThomS)
  • run engine and check lube oil level and freshwater cooling level, and leaks (ThomS)
    • hookup oil cooler raw water feed (removed when looking for water in oil)
    • install air-release valve in raw water anti-siphon loop
      • will install temporary valve (household "coin valve")
      • (later procure/install proper anti-siphon valve)
  • Change transmission fluid (after launch, if necessary) (ThomS)

• install bonding wire and ensure proper grounding (ted, mwall)
  • tie in wires to mast, shrouds

• Remove rusty nuts from bolts on stem plate.
  • non-stainless nuts on bolts are extremely rusty and deteriorating
  • attempts to cut off rusty nuts have been unsuccessful so far.

• repaint name and hailing port on stern (ksovie & his son)
  • remove old name & hailing port using wet 500+ sandpaper, possibly acetone to help (DONE)
  • procure/cut new vinyl lettering (DONE)
  • install new lettering (DONE)
  • compound/wax transom - (ksovie)

• Mark hull with registration number (tyoung) (DONE)

at re-float

• Re-rig centerboard pennant thru mast (during mast step)
  • (see Owner's Instructions pages 4-5, 5A, 14-15, 15A)

• connect electric wires from mast
  • top-of-mast lights (4 wires), masthead/deck lights (3 wires), VHF (coax), RADAR (multi-wire cable), wind indicator (multi-wire cable)

• Return loaned equipment to owners for winterizing

before general sailing

• reinstall RADAR antenna & wiring (ted)

• reinstall wind instruments (ted)

• connect new vhf cable to radio (ted)

• reinstall tricolor (ted)

• reinstall windex (ted)

• depth sounder wires need to be run to the instrument.

• Repair/upgrade traveller (See fix traveller page] (mwall, ksovie)
  • measure buy and install new lines
  • install new cam cleats inside of dodger

• install mounting bracket for bilge pump air bell (tyoung)

• Replace centerboard pennant (WHO)
  • arrange with a boatyard for a post-splash "survey" haulout (e.g. over lunchtime) on TraveLift
  • re-reave new line
    • (see Owner's Instructions pages 4-5, 5A, 14-15, 15A)
    • (and TedY studied how to do it Fall '07, has emails, notes?)

• Adjust throttle friction so it doesn't slow engine down after we set it to an RPM
  • we don't know whether this is a binnacle or engine adjustment
  • now we use the mini-bungee cord loop on the binnacle U-frame

Tasks with a Point Person

• scan Fall '07 survey report (to put on wiki?) or just put aboard Nevermore? (fcharles)

• cushions (mwishear)
  • cut new foam for cushions
  • make new cushion covers

• diagnose and document electrical system (tspettel & tyoung)
  • ongoing See 12-volt DC in Systems List, and Nav Station switch usages and wiring
  • ongoing See 120-volt AC System in Systems List
  • ongoing 110v charging system task description/discussion
    • TODO: test the "blue-wire" charging-inhibition circuit which activates when engine runs
    • TODO: write up operator steps for normal use

• procure new emergency and first-aid kit (asilveira)

• fix screens (tyoung)

• inventory what is on boat (samajane)

• engine periodic maintenance (not repairs) (ThomS)
  • replace two engine pencil-zincs Fall/Winter '07/'08 (DONE)
  • clean/replace fuel filters
  • pick some other chores not done for winterizing, but are on webs ref'd in Winterizing page
  • START a "periodic maintenance schedule (maybe based on [Aleida's] list we were mulling

• Install binnacle GPS power and data connectors (tyoung)

• replace missing screw on base of furler (tspettel)

• Woodworking (dca)
  • Fit & install support for aft lazarette shelf (above steering)
  • Shelf under nav berth
  • Supplement sides of starboard lazarette to prevent items from falling under engine
  • Build shelves for storage under v-berth

• get binnacle compass bubble out
  • remove compass and take to Fran at pavilion (DONE TedY)
  • take to get it repaired (DONE fcharles)
  • reinstall (ksovie?)

• replace freshwater hoses (mwall)
  • attach new hot water heater

Cleaning Tasks (ongoing)

• bilge
  • the bilge needs to be scrubbed with brushes and flushed numerous times (still filthy 6/29/08) (ksovie)

• kitchen
  • clean/tune stove and oven

• main cabin
  • scrub all wood surfaces with murphy's wood soap (diluted)
  • scrub ceiling of main cabin
  • scrub ceiling of main cabin berths

• starboard lazarette
  • remove everything from lazarette then scrub it (use brushes), then put everything back when the lazarette has dried out

• aft lazarette
  • remove everything from lazarette (including wood panels), then scrub the hull and wood panels

• head
  • scrub all surfaces in the head
  • remove everything from cupboards and scrub them out
  • drain holding tank then flush it a few times
  • scrub the hull under the sink
  • clean drain pan and grid

Unclaimed Tasks

• clean and lube winches

• outfit dinghy (boat, boards, motor)

• replace faulty head seals (NOTE: head tune-up kits are aboard)

• replace all head hoses

• install LED lighting (rcleary has some details of replacement parts)

• de-scale mast (in cabin)

• tighten lifelines

• sand and refinish topside brightwork (mwall has the cetol for this and the removable brightwork)

• spec and order new speedometer

• wiring needs to be tidied up, specifically raised to be further from water levels

• replace manual bilge pump (handle socket is fractured)

• install capture wires on anchor retention pin(s)

• fix blower and move its hose to bilge

• build slots for holding washboards

• add zippers or windows to bimini so you can see the sails.

Completed Tasks

• 17may08 removed water heater (12 gallon raritan electric/exchanger)

• 17may08 scraped paint from prop strut

• 17may08 removed old, pitted zincs from prop shaft

• make arrangements for mooring through nov 2008 (mwall)
  • 17may08 confirmed a mooring with boston harbor sailing club for the 2008 season

  • pack it up neatly, and take it to Albany St. basement (building N4)
  • key is at pavilion, on nail-in-wall just inside upstairs office/protest room

• sand down to fit, & revarnish, 3 saloon sole hatches (tspettel)

• scrub topsides to remove scuffs, epoxy, and mildew (and peanuts) (mwall)

• put line on steering wheel for grip and centering (mwall)

• scotchbrite topside stainless fittings (pulpit, stanchions, anchor tray) to remove rust (mwall)
