Departure checklist

This is the checklist of things to do before getting underway.

  • Remove companionway boards. Stow in starboard lazarette.
  • Check recent log entries.
  • Make log entry. Include at least the following:
    • date and time
    • name of each person on board
  • Set battery switch to "House" (battery switch is on panel above galley sink)
  • Configure electrical panels to desired operation, typically
    • Navigation Instruments "on" (in panel above galley sink)
    • Verify that the fuel lift pump "F Pump" switch is "on" (in panel above galley sink)
    • FM Radio "on" (in panel above nav table, also energizes VHF radio)
    • Navman "on" (in panel above nav table, energizes Garmin Chart Plotter)
  • Check bilge water level and pump out if necessary (switch above galley sink).
  • Check engine oil and coolant levels and top off if necessary.
  • Mount ensign on stern rail
  • Hoist MITNA burgee
  • Give basic safety lecture for new sailors (must be less than 10 min.s):
    • life jackets
    • fire extinguishers
    • man overboard procedures
    • VHF radio operation
    • avoiding the boom
    • winch operation and safety
    • lifelines and safety when going forward on deck
