Talk:Departure checklist

The departure checklist itemizes specific tasks that should be performed by the skipper and crew after arriving aboard the boat, but before getting underway.

The departure checklist serves several purposes:

  1. It reminds the skipper and crew of tasks that should be done onboard before getting underway
  2. It acts as a quick reference for these tasks (for example, where items are stowed)
  3. It is an educational tool, as it can be given to new crew who may be able to perform some of the tasks on their own, and may be able to perform some of the other tasks with guidance.

Tasks such as telling crew to bring warm clothing or wear non-marking shoes are not appropriate for this list because they have already arrived onboard and it is too late for them to go buy new shoes. Instructions for crew that require action on their part BEFORE they arrive at the boat should be included in the FAQ. It should be stressed that new sailors read the FAQ before coming to the boat.
