This is the checklist of thing to do before getting underway.

  • unlock cabin, starboard lazarette, and stern lazarette. stow locks in top drawer of nav station.
  • remove companionway boards. stow in cabin.
  • make log entry. include at least the following:
    • date and time
    • name of each person on board
    • engine hours at start
    • fuel gauge reading (the one above nav station seat)
    • holding tank level (QUESTION: is it directly observable?)
  • check log entries of recent trips for repair problems
  • remove guppy. stow in bucket in aft lazarette.
  • check bilge for water; set nav-station panel "BILGE" DOWN to pump water out
  • set lower battery switch to "1" (for the starting battery, battery #3)
    • (later (about 15-min) set upper battery switch to "1" or "2" (a house battery #1 or #2))
    • (and immediately set lower battery switch OFF)
  • set nav-station panel 'MAIN' breaker to 'on'
  • open head valves (there are 2)
  • fly ensign from stern
  • fly MIT burgie from starboard spreader
  • switch instruments ON
  • release steering wheel brake
  • set centerboard (default to half-way)
  • deploy cockpit winch-handles (1 in pocket, optionally 1 in mainsheet winch)
  • push down engine-kill pull-knob

  • prepare to sail (while on mooring, anchor, dock, if not underway)
    • remove sailcover and compass cover
    • release steering wheel brake
    •  ?? anything required about topping lift ??
    • connect main halyard to main, take out slack, put winch-handle in dorade
    • (left to do when go to sail: remove sail ties, raise main, optionally reef, unfurl jib)

QUESTION: Do we check engine oil anymore? Either (a) each sail, or (b) 1st sail of the week?

QUESTION: Do we check battery water level? maybe (a) 1st sail of week, or (b) 1st sail of month? [NOTE that Aleida had sealed batteries; N'more doesn't.]
