A sheet is any line on a boat that is used to move the leward edge of a sail in towards the centerline of the boat.

A sailboat usually has a single mainsheet, for trimming the mainsail.

A sloop usually has two sheets for the jib sail, or genoa. Only one is used at a time. The one not being used (usually the windward one) is referred to as the lazy sheet.
