The Melges 15 is a versatile double-handed racing dinghy that was added to the Sailing Pavilion fleet during summer 2025. It has an asymmetric spinnaker but is more stable than a skiff.

Requirements to Sail

  • Must have full membership (Normal Sailing Card)
  • Must have Helmsman Rating OR Laser: Advanced OR 420: Advanced

Rigging the Melges 15

The boat should be mostly rigged under the cover

  • Remove cover and secure to dock so it can't blow away and sink

Jib

  • Attach black jib hanks to forestay from bottom to top
  • Shackle on jib halyard to head of the jib- make sure jib halyard isn't twisted around mast or stays!
  • The jib halyard is on the starboard side of the mast- haul up until splice comes out of bottom of the mast
    • Hook the spliced loop to the hook on the starboard side of the mast
    • Tension the hooked line to pull jib all the way up and to achieve proper rig tension
  • Coil and store jib halyard in top pocket of spinnaker bag
  • The mainsail can be started on the dock but should only be pulled up when the boat is pointing into the wind, on the water
