The Melges 15 is a versatile double-handed racing dinghy that was added to the Sailing Pavilion fleet during summer 2025. It has an asymmetric spinnaker but is more stable than a skiff.

Requirements to Sail

  • Must have full membership (Normal Sailing Card)
  • Must have Helmsman Rating OR Laser: Advanced OR 420: Advanced

Rigging the Melges 15

The boat should be mostly rigged under the cover

  • Remove covers and secure them to dock so they can't blow away and sink!
  • Check for water in the tanks- drain as needed and re-secure plugs
  • Close auto-bailers

Jib

The jib should be rolled in boat with tack and jib sheets already attached

  • Attach black jib hanks to forestay from bottom to top
  • Shackle on jib halyard to head of the jib- make sure jib halyard isn't twisted around mast or stays!
  • The jib halyard is on the starboard side of the mast- haul up until splice comes out of bottom of the mast
    • Hook the spliced loop to the hook on the starboard side of the mast
    • Tension the hooked line to pull jib all the way up and to achieve proper rig tension
  • Coil and store jib halyard in top pocket of spinnaker bag

Mainsail

The mainsail can be started on the dock but should only be pulled up when the boat is pointing into the wind, on the water

  • Shackle the head of the sail to the main halyard
  • Attach the clew of the sail to the outhaul
  • The main sail will be rigged on the port side of boom
  • The main halyard is on the port side of the mast- hoist the mainsail until the splice comes out of the bottom of the mast
    • Hook the splice onto the metal hook on the port side of the mast
    • Tension the hooked line to pull mainsail all the way up
  • Coil and store main halyard in the top pocked of the spinnaker bag
  • Slide bottom two slugs into the mast track below the sail entry feed
  • Connect cunningham thru top grommet and then down thru clam cleat on starboard side of the mast

Blades

  • Daggerboard slides into hull casing and bungee goes around it for tension
  • Black preventer line ensures board can't fall out and get separated from boat
  • Tiller can be toggled to drop rudder down into sailing position

Spinnaker

Spinnaker should already be rigged (on the port side of the boat). Please ask for help if spinnaker is tangled.

  • The key to rigging the douser line is that it goes underneath everything (foot, spinnaker sheet, etc)

De-rigging the Melges 15

Opposite of rigging!

  • Lower mainsail while head to wind
  • Flip up rudder and remove daggerboard
  • Close auto-bailers before loading onto dock
  • Haul onto dock and move away from edge of dock (out of reach of catboat boom)
  • Lower jib and unclasp hanks
    • Leave tack and clew attached
    • Roll jib in boat
  • Roll mainsail and store in boat
  • Pull spinnaker out of bag (but leave all lines connected) and leave on deck of boat to dry
  • Put cover on securely
