Lines run along the deck to which crew can attach themselves with a harness. They serve to prevent crew from going overboard when they need to be on deck.
Flat nylon webbing is often used as jacklines to minimize the risk of tripping on them. Jacklines should be run from the bow to the cockpit, so crew can safely clip onto the line before leaving the cockpit.
