The traveler is a point of attachment for a sheet that can move athwartship (from side to side).

Larger sailboats, such as X Dimension, usually have a traveler for the mainsheet that includes a block mounted on a rail that can be moved to port or to starboard. This allows the angle of the boom to be adjusted without changing the tension on the mainsheet, which would affect the twist of the sail.
