Notice of Race

October 8-9, 2016, MIT Sailing Pavilion

1 RULES

1.1 The regatta shall be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing of World Sailing, and by the rules and regulations of MIT Sailing.

1.2 The Prescriptions of the US National Authority (US Sailing) shall apply.

1.3 The ICSA class rules of the intercollegiate dinghy class as described in The Procedural Rules for Intercollegiate Sailing Competition 2013-2016 shall apply.

1.4 Competitors shall wear helmets while on the water.

 

2 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY

2.1 The Brass Rat regatta is open to MIT students, MIT alumni, and all other sailors who submit a completed Entry Form prior to Friday, October 7, 2016 at 1700. There is no entry fee for MIT students, but contributions to the Sailing Pavilion are strongly encouraged.

 

3 FEES

The entry fee is $60 for everyone except MIT students. Please pay in advance electronically if at all possible; otherwise you may pay by check or in cash at the event.  There is no fee for MIT students. However, you must register prior to Friday, October 7, 2016 at 1700.

 

4 SCHEDULE

Saturday, October 8, 2016

  • 09:00 - 09:30     Check in, T shirt distribution, and Boat Assignments.
  • 09:45                Competitors' Meeting immediately followed by racing.
  • 12:30 or so        Lunch break with Hot Dogs, PB, Jelly and Fluff provided.
  • 13:30 - ~17:30   Racing continues.
  • 18:00                Blue Ribbon BBQ Dinner for all competitors at the sailing pavilion immediately following the racing.

 

Sunday, October 9, 2016

  • 09:30 - 09:45    Check in and Boat Assignments.
  • 10:00 - 14:30    Racing continues with a brief lunch break (leftovers) between sets.
  • 15:00               Racing concludes followed by Brass Rat Trophy presentation.

This schedule is tentative, sailing may be extended or shortened in the event of unfavorable conditions.

 

5 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

The sailing instructions will be available at registration.

 

6 VENUE

Racing will be conducted from the MIT Sailing Pavilion on the Charles River lower basin. Parking is available on Memorial Drive westbound, the lower end of Ames Street or (possibly) in the Hayward Street MIT parking lot. Bring a bailing bucket, tell-tales, water bottle, sunscreen and a good attitude.

 

7 SCORING and FORMAT

7.1 Scoring will be the Low Point System. Byes may be implemented if we are oversubscribed.

7.2 Each competitor's Brass Rat Regatta score shall be the sum of his or her scores for all races scored and sailed on both Saturday and Sunday, excluding his or her worst score. Should ten or more races be sailed and scored, the worst score shall be excluded. (This amends Rule A2.2 and will be detailed in the SI's.) The overall Brass Rat Champion and Brass Rat Female Champion shall be declared at the conclusion of Sunday's racing.

7.3 All races will be sailed using the MIT Sailing Pavilion fleet of Tech Dinghies.

7.4 All Brass Rat races must be sailed solo.

 

8 SAFETY

8.1 All competitors shall wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD at all times while on the water. There are plenty available at the pavilion or you may bring your own.

8.2 All competitors shall wear a helmet at all times while in a Tech Dinghy on the water. These are available at the pavilion or you may bring your own. Many types of helmets have been approved for use by the MIT Sailing Staff.

 

9 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See the Racing Rules of Sailing rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority shall not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.
