Sailtec Integral Backstay Adjuster (Model 10SI) Brochure: [1]

When sailing upwind, the backstay should be adjusted so that the piston is approximately 2 inches from the white gauge on the shaft. Cross check the headstay sag. In moderate winds, the headstay should have very little sag.

TEMPORARY NOTE: The Perkins engine SHOP and PARTS manuals are available only as web copies as listed in the | documents list. As of now (30Aug11) we are verifying their dates when printed relative to our engine's age, and looking for a complete parts manual.

There is a mechanical fuel gauge located under the port main saloon bunk cushion. It is quite accurate when the boat is level. The electrical fuel gauge(s) are not operative.

Bilge Pumps

See the previous owner's Useful Info writeup, page 7, section headed "Bilge Pumps".
NOTE, however, that the control of these two pumps has been changed at MIT (>=14Sep11).

  • Jabsco Model 34600-Series Electric Diaphragm Bilge Pump
    • Jabsco catalog shows Model 3460-0000 as their 12-volt DC version
    • This a high-capacity pump, actuated by a switch above the sink, powered by the "house" 12-v batteries. The "house battery must be 'on' for this switch to energize the pump.
    • There is a bilge float switch that turns on the pump when the water level in the bilge activates the switch, powered thru an inline fuse by the "house" batteries.
    • The pump is located under the nav table in a locker, and a hose into the bilge, and a strumbox (filter). Accessing the pump's check valves is easy to clear out small bits of crud that get past the strumbox.
    • The Jabsco bilge pump is plumbed to an outlet at the stern just above the waterline.
    • The in-line fuse is rated for 15 amps and the fuseholder is adjacent to the connection at the positive terminal of the house battery bank.
    • TODO: we need inline fuse info: slo-blow?, size, and state its location.

  • Rule (unidentified model) automatic bilge pump
    • This pump's original purpose was to pump out a dammed zone between the engine and the bilge pump, i.e. to pump water leaking between the rudder post and the thru-hull tube.
Now (14Sep11) this water is no longer dammed, so the primary bilge pump (Jabsco, above) pumps out this leak's water.
    • The pump's design causes it to operate every 2-1/2 minutes, and pumps as long as water is present; otherwise, if no water is present, it turns itself off and runs again in 2-1/2 minutes. It is powered thru a dedicated inline fuse by the "house" batteries.
    • TODO: we need model number of the Rule pump.
    • TODO: we need inline fuse amperage, slo-blow?, size, and state its location.

Head

The head is a standard Jabsco hand-operated marine toilet unit connected to a very small (~5 gallon) holding tank. By lifting the teak lid next to the sink in the forward cabin vanity, one can see the hose and valve to deflect sewage into the small holding tank or overboard. The coupling for pump out is located near the valve assembly. Pump out stations have several coupling styles and can match as necessary. The head is Jabsco model 29090-2000 (compact bowl & seat.

NOTE: At the present time (09/13/2011), the head is configured to deflect sewage overboard and the valves cannot be moved. The head is currently placarded "Head Inoperative Do Not Use"

Electrical

12-volt

The best measure of the status of the house battery is to use the switch above the galley sink and toggle it to the right when the engine is stopped (i.e., not charging) and the battery switch is set to "House". There is a voltmeter near the switch that should indicate at about the red/green line. When the engine is running, the indicated voltage should ba approximately 14V. Note that the switch sometimes has a poor contact and needs to be jiggled a little to have it work. Note that the ammeter in the engine instrument cluster in the cockpit is not working.

TEMPORARY NOTE (02Sep11): The block tabulation of electronics documentation below will probably finally reside in the [Documents] section of this wiki.
The list is here primarily because some Electronic Wiz found many web hits on current manuals, and then a paperwork slog related onboard documents to the devices too.
