End of 2023 season

Out-of-water observations:

  • Topsides paint acceptable: has some minor scratches and dings forward; more problematic, small areas blistering and peeling around stern
  • Bottom paint in good condition, except for a few small patches on top and bottom of rudder where we are down to bare wood
  • Varnish in good condition, except for the bowsprit, where there are several cracks through to the wood, showing water discoloration, and the cockpit coamings, which are yellowed and show some expected wear, though no cracks or flaking
  • Caulking: good, except one large butt seam by starboard forward sensor where putty starting to separate
  • Propeller has substantial marine growth, needs full cleaning

Inboard observations:

  • Chainplates are deep green and appear to be suffering from galvanic corrosion, especially those in contact with the stainless steel diagonal supports. Need informed inspection
  • May be some water intrusion where the chain plates pass through the deck
  • Some other evidence of galvanic corrosion, including on an engine mount bolt and a through-hull fitting
  • Mast step collects water; check for rot (inspected when dry on 10-14-23, appeared to be fine)
  • Mild mildew growth throughout interior (washed down with mild bleach and water rinse on 10-14-23, left compartments open to air)
  • Blackwater tank needs pumpout (confirm they did this)
  • Engine needs winterization: oil change; impeller replacement? filter replacements? fuel tank prep? (they did the oil change and oil filter, but we need to check on impeller and fuel tank cleaning).

Mast inspection

  • Wood spacer behind the forestay tang is showing water intrusion behind loose varnish
  • Starboard forward chafe plate at the mast top is standing proud, needs to be re-bedded and tightened
  • Varnish gone under spinnaker halyard block and jib halyard block
  • Small poke holes showing water intrusion under the port middle shroud tang
  • Small patches of missing varnish across length of mast, some showing darkening; generally needs re-varnishing
  • Top of jib track on forestay needs a cap or other finishing element
  • NMEA cable is very poorly spliced at bottom of mast
  • Forward end of boom is being chewed up by gooseneck--shorten or protect?
  • Lower spreaders have some worn spots, and could be re-varnished

Sail Inspection

Mainsail:

  • Short clean tear or cut, not fully through fabric, about 2’ below head.
  • Luffline/jackline showing moderately heavy wear. A thinner line would run more easily.
  • Otherwise in good condition

160:

  • 2nd batten pocket from top shows small holes from wear on pocket fabric. Perhaps reinforce with a spreader patch
  • Otherwise in good condition

140:

  • On leech, extensive fraying fabric along tabling, batten pockets, and other seams that expose a raw cut edge. Stitching is in good shape
  • Spreader patch is nearly worn though and needs replacement/reinforcement
  • Small holes from wear are developing on 2nd batten pocket from top—perhaps add second spreader patch
  • Long tear along luff boltrope near head has torn through patch material, re-exposing boltrope

95

  • Good condition. Tear along luff boltrope has been professionally patched

Working jib (old)

  • Boltrope tearing loose at head. Could use reinforcement
  • Mildew starting on foot

Big Red Spinnaker

  • In good condition

Code Zero

  • Rolled on furler; not unrolled for inspection
  • Showing mildew on clew

Running Rigging

(Numerical key: 1 = good condition, close to new; 2 = light wear, no problems; 3 = moderate wear, nothing concerning; 4 = moderate wear, monitor, plan replacement; 5 = replace this season)

Running backstays, standing part

  • 5. Compression and heat damage on heavily loaded attachments to hardware. Upper legs (larger, white) show light wear along length. Lower legs (thinner, black) show general deterioration in outer strands, with some exterior breakage. Recommend: Replace this year

Running backstays, running part

  • 3. moderate wear at standing ends, light wear at working ends. OK at least one more season; would be candidates for end-for-ending. Both have similar wear

Topping lift

  • 4. Broken exterior yarns across length consistent with UV damage; interior fibers in good shape. Probably OK one more season

Main halyard:

  • 4. Moderate wear along length, heaviest in last three feet of working end. Replace soon.

Main sheet:

  • 5. General exterior and interior deterioration, consistent with age and use. Fibers fragile. Recommend: Replace this year.

Deep reef outhaul

  • 2. Light wear

Shallow reef outhaul

  • 4. Moderate to heavy wear; looks aged. End-for-end; consider replacement

Jib halyard

  • 2. Good condition. Minor wear near sail shackle

Jib sheets

  • 3. Moderate wear, showing age. Replace soon

Spinnaker halyard (red fleck)

  • 2. General light wear, more near block when set. Possibly end-for-end

Spinnaker halyard (beige with dyneema section)

  • 3. General light wear. A few pulled strands covered with electrical tape close to splice. Some fibers breaking near splice.

Spinnaker tack outhaul (black)

  • 1. Good. Some light wear by block

Spinnaker tack outhaul (blue)

  • 1. Good condition

Spinnaker sheets

  • 4. Stripped dynema sections show heavy wear, breakage in outer fibers, and some strand pulling. Light to moderate wear on coated sections.
