Lynx 16 Cheat Sheet

Emergency info

  • Always keep cool. Collect your thoughts, and then take appropriate action.
  • Flares, anchor in forward compartment.
  • Running lights switch next to tiller.
  • Call MIT sailing pavilion 617 253 4884 (TBD: is this best #?)

Forestay broken

  1. Head downwind.
  2. Lower sail.

Excess water in boat

  1. Clear self-bailing holes near centerboard.
  2. Manual pump in forward compartment.

Man overboard (MOB)

  1. Shout "Man overboard!!"
  2. Everyone: Stay in boat, don't jump into water to rescue unless absolutely necessary.
  3. Skipper: Command crew-member to keep sight of victim and constantly point to victim.
  4. Skipper: Sail a beam reach for 5-6 boat lengths.
  5. Skipper: Tack and sail a broad reach towards MOB. Setup for pickup on leeward side.
  6. Skipper: Position crew to be ready for pickup.
  7. Skipper: As approaching MOB, luff sail to stop boat.
  8. Crew: pickup victim on leeward side.

Too much wind

  1. Head to wind, let sail out.
  2. Sail carefully back to dock and reef.
  3. If really crazy, lower peak halyard (red halyard).

Lost mainsheet

Don't gybe!

  1. Put centerboard fully down.
  2. Turn boat directly into wind to center the boom.
  3. Route mainsheet through pulleys.
  4. Re-tie stopper knot(s).


Stuck in irons near wall

  1. Crew: Put out fender.
  2. Crew: fend off wall and other boats with oar!
  3. Pull in sail and reorient boat with oar to to power up.

Preparing the boat

  1. Check stopper knot on mainsheet! Check it again!
  2. Stow backpacks and other loose items under bench. Always keep lanes clear.
  3. Put centerboard all the way down.
  4. Remove sail cover, roll up, stow under bench.
  5. Remove tiller-tamers & boom crutch, and stow under bench.
  6. Raise the sail: (green throat halyard, red peak halyard).
    1. Pull both halyards concurrently until throat is fully raised.
    2. Pull peak halyard until sail is smooth.
    3. Secure halyards in cam cleats. Don't cleat halyards to horns.
    4. Coil lines and hook over horns.


Launching from the dock

  1. Centerboard fully down.
  2. Pull in sail to power-up.
  3. Push tiller to dock.
  4. Optional: give boat a push to start sailing.
  5. Wedge fender under bench.

Launching from a mooring

Don't release mooring line until skipper commands!

  1. Centerboard fully down.
  2. Put mooring line on bow cleat closest to wall.
  3. Crew 1: Release mooring and hold onto line securely.
  4. Crew 2: Pull in mainsail to power up.
  5. Skipper: Set tiller to sail away from wall.
  6. Crew 1: Walk mooring line towards back of boat.
  7. Skipper decides whether boat is ready to sail:
    • Yes
    1. Skipper: "Release mooring."
    2. Crew 1: Release mooring line.
    • No
    1. Skipper: "Abort launch!"
    2. Crew 1: Walks line towards front of boat, secures to bow cleat closest to wall.


Sailing

Tacking

  1. To keep speed up through tack, push the tiller gently, no more than 3/4 across.
  2. Make sure traveler slides to new position.

Gybing

Don't slam gybe the Lynx! Always gybe with the main pulled in.

  1. Setup a broad reach.
  2. Alert crew.
  3. Skipper: begins turn.
  4. Crew: Pull mainsheet towards center of boat.
  5. Crew: after sail gently changes side, let mainsheet out and trim for new course.
  6. Make sure traveler slides to new position.

Returning to the dock

  1. Put fender out.
  2. Put centerboard all the way down.
  3. Setup to land towards eastern (downtown) end of dock.
  4. Let sail out to slow boat.
  5. Turn sharply into wind.
  6. Crew steps out with bow line, ties boat to dock.

Returning to a mooring

  1. Put centerboard all the way down.
  2. Put fender out.
  3. Crew 1: Oar ready to fend off wall.
  4. Crew 2: Ready at bow to pickup mooring line.
  5. Skipper: Approximately 1-2 boat lengths before mooring, turn sharply into wind, luff sails.
  6. Crew 2: Pickup mooring, put line through chock, secure to horn. Tell skipper that boat is secure (or that we missed!)
  7. Crew: Lower sail.
