End of 2023 season
Out-of-water observations:
- Topsides paint: moderate surface wear
- Bottom paint: significant flaking post power washing. Needs to be redone.
- Varnish: generally ok, needs routine refresh
- Caulking:
- Propeller/shaft/zincs:
- Main cabin skylight hatch is cracked on aft edge, hardware not installed. Needs repair
- Lazarette hatch: control arm not installed. Hardware in nav locker, starboard aft above stove
Inboard observations:
- Chainplates, interior: check color change noticed from 2024
- Galvanic corrosion: check from 2024: [Some other evidence of galvanic corrosion, including on an engine mount bolt and a through-hull fitting]
- Mast step:
- Mild mildew growth throughout interior (washed down with mild bleach and water rinse, left compartments open to air)
- Blackwater tank was not pumped prior to delivery
- Engine: per Dion's on 11/11/24: engine has been winterized, but routine service not yet done
Mast inspection
- Mast: under forestay tang: discoloration around spacer block consistent with water entry. Spacer block is poorly bedded with areas for water collection. Needs dedicated inspection for rot and good rebedding
- Mast: open wood fibers at heel of mast, aft end of tenon: need protection from rot and water that collects in mast step
- Boom:
- Spreaders:
- Forestay and jib foil: top cap still missing at top of foil; aluminum is deforming a bit from the wear
Sail Inspection
Mainsail:
- Wear on batten pockets; needs reinforcement (MIT)
- Minor broken stitching
160:
140:
95 -- Send to North
- Stitching on top batten pocket pulling loose
- Two lateral holes and some pulled stitching along the luff bolt rope
- Isolated hole near second batten
Working jib (old)
- Isolated broken stitches, generally present across entire sail
- Small tear in one layer of doubled fabric opposite of lower telltales
- Small holes and broken stitching along foot
Big Red Spinnaker
Code Zero
- Not unrolled for inspection.
Running Rigging
(Numerical key: 1 = good condition, close to new; 2 = light wear, no problems; 3 = moderate wear, nothing concerning; 4 = moderate wear, monitor, plan replacement; 5 = replace this season)
Running backstays, standing part (new 2024)
Running backstays, running part
- 3. Localized moderate wear. End for end
Topping lift
Main halyard:
Main sheet (new 2024)
- 2. Surface wear, worsening farther from standing end. Yarns look strong across rope. Perhaps end for end. Stored at Dions
Deep reef outhaul
- 2. Light wear. Stored at Dions.
Shallow reef outhaul
- 4. Moderate to heavy wear; looks aged. Broken strands ~1' from end.
Jib halyard
Jib sheets (new 2024)
- 2. Light wear. Stored at Dions.
Spinnaker halyard (red fleck)
Spinnaker halyard (beige with dyneema section)
Spinnaker tack outhaul (black)
- 3. Areas of concentrated moderate/heavy wear on outer coating. End for end
Spinnaker tack outhaul (blue)
Spinnaker sheets
- 4. Stripped dynema sections show heavy wear, breakage in outer fibers, and some strand pulling. Light to moderate wear on coated sections.
