Sailing Cards Information

To use the MIT Sailing Pavilion and its fleet of over 100 sailboats you need to be a MITNA member by having a current sailing card.

Sailing cards are given free for those with MIT athletic privileges, including all MIT students. The cards are good for an academic year, always from July 15th of one year to July 15th of the next year.

There are three main types of Sailing Cards:

  1. MIT Students: free.
  2. Normal Sailing Card: included if you have athletic privileges.
  3. Racing Program: a special program for those who wish to join the Pavilion for racing only (racing card details).

To join MITNA and get a sailing card:

  1. Create a new online account using the new account page.
  2. After registering, bring to the Sailing Pavilion:
    1. MIT Students: your MIT ID - or -
Normal Sailing Cards: an ID and proof of MIT Athletic Privileges - or -
Racers: an ID and payment for your sailing card (we prefer credit card)
    2. Proof of swimming ability if under 21 or an ID that shows you are over 21
during regular hours and ask the dock staff for a sailing card. If you had a sailing card at any point in the whole history of the Pavilion, you can find it in our archives and renew it as long as you have MIT athletic priviledges.

Experience Assessment

You do not need to know how to sail when you join MITNA, you can learn through our Learn-to-Sail classes or a PE class. Most of the time we will recommend to both new and experienced sailors to join the Wednesday Class 1, to learn about how the Pavilion operates. The following table guides you through what to do to join:

Experience Wed #1 Wed #2 Wed #3 Sun
I've never sailed before. X X X X
I took Wed #1 more than two years ago. X X X X
I completed all Wed classes or the Sunday class about a year ago. None! Just go sailing!
I had a sailng card with Provisional or higher rating many years ago. None! Just ask for tips from the staff and go sailing!
I completed all Wed classes or the Sunday class more than two years ago and never got a Provisional rating.     X
I already know how to sail, and I'm good at it, but never at MIT. X
I'm an expert/superb/amazing/incredible sailor, but new to MIT Sailing. X

Guests

All guests must be able to swim as least 100 meters.

Guests taken out as crews by a member: There is no charge for friends of MITNA members to sail with them in the same boat. In general a Tech Dhingy can take a total of 2 or 3 people; a Rhodes 19 can carry up to 6 people. These guests are not allowed to take out a boat on their own.
