Sailing
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
JM Modisette and Emma Bassein led a clinic in the morning which demonstrated rigging
fundamentals as well as maneuvering in a collegiate FJ. Most sailors had never
experienced a boat with the jib leads so far aft that the crews need to face backwards
while sailing upwind as well as a boat which dramatically increases boat speed after
tacking or gybing. Along with a monsoon, light breezes settled in to the Charles River
after lunch allowing six races to be completed. Courses were W/L twice around with a
leeward gate in MITs colorful fleet of FJs. Chief judge Bill Collins had no business
from the protest room as all disputes were settled by turns on the water. Franny
Charles, Jr was the event chair.
Congratulations to winners Evan Cooke and Kaleigh Hagood from Annisquam YC who
dominated the competition with only top 3 finishes. Manchester YC's Jenny Adler and
Jeff Goodrich as well as Alex Cook with Darby Smith from Eastern YC qualified along
with the winners to represent Mass Bay at the New England Championship this coming
weekend in Scarborough, Maine.
